This paper discusses the nature of Islam in the Sulawesi region of Indonesia. It highlights the differences in the perception of Islam and Sharia (Islamic law) among the Islamist circles and the political elites in the region and contrasts this with that of the general public and the aspirations of the latter. The author traces the development of Islam in Sulawesi, lists the main social actors and discusses the South Sulawesi regency of Bulukumba as a case study.
