This paper discusses the endeavor of militant Islamic groups in Indonesia to implement Sharia (Islamic law). It lists all Sharia-based regional regulations that have been enacted in Indonesia since the demise of the Suharto government. The author discusses these laws, reviews their efficacy and explains that the application of Sharia has met substantial challenges from Indonesian pro-democracy groups.
