This paper addresses the course of politics of the Indian federal state of Karnataka, which are characterized by intrigue and turmoil. It comments on the results and implications of the 2004 provincial elections, reviews the interaction of the regional parties and identifies repercussions for Indian politics. The author argues that in Indian politics smaller parties are taking precedence over the continuously declining national parties.
