This brief looks at the election victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Western Indian state of Gujarat and points to the likely implications. In particular, the paper assesses the elections' repercussions for the Indian National Congress Party, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) party, the BJP itself and India as a whole. The paper argues that there is evidence that Gujarat's Muslim minority is reduced to the state of a ghettoized, demonized and isolated community.
