This brief considers the history, development and strength of Pakistan's Islamic parties, providing information on the Jama'at-e-Islami (JI) and the Jamiat-Ulema-e-Islam (JUI). The paper describes the parties' ideas and ideologies, reviews their electoral record and examines the cooperation with other organizations. The paper argues that the Islamic parties in Pakistan never enjoyed decisive popular support.
