This paper examines Islam and religious identity in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. It assesses the social life of stereotypes and essentialisms in the society. The author suggests that a potentially fruitful way of approaching religious life among Bishkek’s not so "religious" population is to focus on how people there variously enchant and disenchant their surrounding world.
