This paper examines the Russian Duma election of 2 December 2007 and its implications for democracy. It assesses three possible options for President Putin and claims that the elections' results reinforced the undemocratic trends in Russia. The author argue that Putin's popularity does not compensate for the lack of democratic accountability and recommends European actors to focus on democratic stability.
