This paper comments on the background and circumstances of the assassination of the Pakistani politician Benazir Bhutto on 27 December 2007 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. It reviews the threats and attacks against Bhutto since her return to Pakistan, rebuts rumors of President Musharraf's involvement and points to Bhutto's policy toward Islamism. Subsequently, it assesses the impact on the country's stability and states that the postponed parliamentary elections will be one of the most divisive.
