This brief focuses on the economics of owning and operating a "Nano" car manufactured by the Indian company Tata Motors and assesses its impact on motorization in the country. It introduces the basic features of the Nano, looks at the development of the Indian transport market and discusses Nano's actual costs. The author argues that despite its symbolic low price, the Nano will not lead to a spur in car ownership in India.
