This brief focuses on the state and likely future of urban transport in India and steps required to make it sustainable. Before discussing the facets of urban transport, the paper looks at the trend of urbanization in India and derives from that demands for the transport system. It develops requirements for a sustainable mix of different means of transport and assesses the government's policy in this field. The author states that the trajectory of urban transport needs urgent correction.
