This article looks at Russia’s efforts to influence the 2016 US presidential election and, more broadly, how the technological dissemination of misinformation is sabotaging earnest public discourse. In keeping with these themes, the text 1) provides historical examples of US attempts to influence domestic and foreign audiences; 2) discusses the approach of President Trump and other senior politicians towards information and the media; and 3) reviews the challenge posed to democracy by the lack of credible arbiters of information.
