This report examines why the North African regimes have become a security problem both for themselves as well as the EU and the US. The author argues that the combination of the nature of the North African regimes, the US war against terror, the European fight against illegal immigration and the "home-grown" North African terrorism, all serve to strengthen the North African concerns of regime security at the expense of political pluralism. The report states that the North African regimes' tendency to cling to the status quo results in both the depolitization and Islamization of their populations.
