This publication examines the EU's Strategy for a New Partnership with Central Asia, which was adopted during the German EU presidency in June 2007. The author discusses key features of the strategy, including security and energy but also the rule of law, democratization and human rights. She explains why EU engagement in the region is important and focuses on Kazakhstan, argueably the most important country for the EU in the region. The paper concludes with policy recommendations.
