This paper looks at reasons for and impacts of protests of Nepal's United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF). It identifies the political and economic implications of the protests in the Tarai, discusses the petroleum subsidization policy by the Nepalese government and reviews the policy to contain inflation. The author argues that increases in prices of basic necessities have placed the Nepalese economy in a highly precarious situation.
