This paper explores India's policy toward Tibet, commenting on the historical context, the humanitarian dimension and political imperatives. It outlines India's reactions to the Tibetan uprising of 2008, discusses the implications for the relations with China and describes the evolution of the Indian Tibet policy. Furthermore, it examines China's policy toward the Dalai Lama and attempts to find a negotiated settlement of the conflict. The author states that India has been diplomatically correct and politically cautious in responding to the 2008 Tibetan uprising.
