This paper speculates on what the Popular Party’s (PP) recent ascent to power means for Spain’s political future. According to the paper’s author, the minority government faces serious obstacles, particularly because of the parallel rise of far left and centrist parties in a deeply fragmented parliament. The fragmentation may impede PP efforts to reform Spain’s social security and education systems, to lower the country’s budget deficit, and to tackle corruption.
