This paper examines Indonesia’s current approach to the territorial disputes in the South China Sea. After reviewing the historical context of the specific quarrel between China and Indonesia, the text’s author contends that Jakarta’s approach to the broader disputes in the South China Sea now centers on protecting its own interests. He then explores the reasons why this approach has already had a negative impact on regional stability, and why it may undermine Indonesia’s long-term interests.
