This paper looks at the course and resolution of past Chinese-US crises, examining their most prominent issues and the conclusions to be drawn. It addresses specifically the 1996 Taiwan Strait crisis, the 1999 bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade and the 2001 mid-air collision between US and Chinese military aircrafts. Based on these events, the paper identifies specific characteristics of crisis management and draws conclusions for managing future crises. The author points to the danger of a new Taiwan crisis spilling over into a larger war.
