This paper examines the difference between the terrestrial and the maritime realms of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The author argues that the "long peace" that has existed in the ASEAN region since the 1980s applies only to interactions on land. In contrast, ASEAN relations in contested maritime zones, such as the South China Sea and the Celebes Sea, have been marked by a militarization of disputes. The author concludes that the "ASEAN way" still does not apply to the maritime way, and that cooperation at sea will be difficult to achieve.
