This paper examines the fiscal policy in the Indian federal states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It outlines the states' economic development, their actual revenue and spending patterns as well as their actual spending on education, public health and social welfare. The author states that within the environment of the overall improvements in India's macro economy, the individual states have pursued different paths that were determined by local political considerations.
