This paper addresses reasons for and implications of the skyrocketing prices for agricultural commodities, focusing on Asia. It identifies factors that have changed the long-term equilibrium of food grain production, looks at structural changes in Asia's agricultural production and discusses the repercussions of economic policy and market regulation. The author states that there is little reason to hope that food prices will return to their long-term trend soon unless there is a marked change in the agricultural sector.
