This paper reviews historically the relatively obscure trend in Islam known as the Hashwiyah. The author explains that this religious tendency, marked by an uncompromising dogmatism suspicious of rationality, has recently received renewed impetus. He reviews the main tenets of the Hashwiyah and other traditionalist Muslim doctrines. The paper argues that a critical attitude toward the legacy of the past can enable Muslims to overcome feelings of marginalization and disempowerment in the globalized world.
