This brief discusses the idea of an official organization of democratic states. The authors argue that there are two different conceptions of a possible league of democracies. The first, shared by US proponents of the idea, is a combative intent to join geo-political battle with the autocrats and bypass the UN Security Council with forceful interventions whenever there is a blockage. The second conception consists of a softer but allied and more vigorous democracy promotion initiative. The authors discuss both types of conception as well as the idea of a league of democracies in general.
