This paper outlines three potential futures for South Africa, which may come about after the December 2017 National Conference of the ruling African National Congress (ANC). The three possibilities are 1) the Bafana Bafana scenario, in which the country simply continues on its current and dubious path; 2) the Nation Divided scenario, where the traditionalist camp within the ANC holds sway; and 3) the Mandela Magic scenario, which would involve a rapid transition to new leadership dominated by proactive reformers.
