In this text, various experts examine the South China Sea imbroglio and the role middle powers might play in preventing future conflicts in the region. More specifically, the authors 1) argue that Australian policy-makers should explore an ‘Asia-first’ approach to the problem, primarily by working with Indonesia and South Korea to help manage and encourage the resolution of territorial disputes; 2) provide an Indonesian perspective on middle power diplomacy and how it might apply to the South China Sea area; and 3) examine South Korea’s ‘strategic distance’ from the region’s problems.
