This paper evaluates the US’ updated 2016 national strategy to prevent violent extremism (PVE). The paper’s author examines the various criticisms directed at the previous 2011 strategy and discusses how the 2016 PVE aims to improve on these perceived shortcomings. Despite lingering skepticism, the updated PVE also continues to prioritize trust-building efforts as one of its key aims. As a result, the author concludes that the success of the new PVE implementation plan will depend on states engaging with local communities and grassroots organizations.
