This paper analyzes Russia’s ‘Pivot to Asia’ and the accelerating reorientation of its foreign policy, economic relations, and diplomatic activity to the east. According to the author, Russia’s alienation from the west following its annexation of Crimea has both reinvigorated Russo-Chinese relations and fostered Russian interests in ASEAN countries as potential investment opportunities. China has gained an increasingly prominent role, as Moscow hopes to lift its Far Eastern region out of stagnation. However, the paper proposes that Russian interests and capabilities may be obstructed by the limited potential of Russian energy and arms exports to ASEAN members.
