This paper reviews US strategic interests in the North Atlantic and Northern Europe, with a focus on the maritime dimension. The paper also assesses 1) key security challenges to these interests, particularly Russia's growing naval strike capabilities; 2) how increased US military presence and operations are designed to address such challenges; 3) how US defense cooperation with its NATO allies and a deepening partnerships with Finland and Sweden contribute to this; and 4) the scope for further defense cooperation in the maritime domain.
