This commentary examines the apparent expansion of Al Qaeda networks in the Western Sahel. Among other initiatives, for example, the group has recently launched a new entity known as the Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM). Yes, the entity’s purpose is to strengthen al Qaeda’s foothold in Northern Africa, but the text’s author isn’t sanguine about its prospects. He believes that lingering ideological disparities will make true cooperation between GSIM’s disparate forces rather unlikely.
