This publication argues that the political, legal, and ethical questions raised by the development and use of lethal autonomous weapon systems (LAWS) are urgent and of great importance for the shaping of German security and defense policy. In response and to help Germany address these questions, this study first briefly outlines the extent to which autonomous weapon systems are the subject of political debate. It then examines the possible effects of the development and use of LAWS. On this basis, it finally looks at the debates on the regulation of LAWS at the international, European, and national levels and derives recommendations for action by the German Bundestag and the Federal Government.
