Will the United Kingdom’s planned exit from the European Union accelerate the creation of a truly common European security and defense policy? The skeptical author of this article sees opportunities to rationalize and boost the efficiency of European armed forces, but thus far little progress has been made to aggregate or even harmonize defense spending within an EU framework. Additionally, counteractive measures must be taken to counter divisive regionalist sentiments, but they in turn have to be implemented with the greatest possible degree of unanimity.
