The four articles in this issue focus on the so-called Islamic State’s (IS) budding influence in Southeast Asia, and whether the group can sustain itself against the military campaigns being mounted against it in Syria and Iraq. The articles specifically look at 1) what parts of the world might look like after the defeat of IS; 2) how female jihadists in Southeast Asia are using new media technologies to promote terrorism; 3) the growing security risks posed to Malaysia by extremist threats in the east of the country, as perpetrated by the Philippines-based Abu Sayyaf Group; and 4) the extent of IS influence in the Philippines.
