This paper argues that Afghanistan may soon face serious democratic challenges, primarily because of the expiration of the US brokered power-sharing deal which split executive authority in two and mandated a number of political and electoral reforms that have yet to occur. Indeed, the emergence of three anti-government alliances and other problems highlight the need for swift, pragmatic solutions, such as a new political agreement that enables the current political dispensation to complete its five-year term and focus its efforts on economic and national security issues.
