This paper contends that climate change poses serious problems to peacebuilding missions. In response, the text’s authors examine the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), the work of which has been hindered by climate-related security risks. For instance, the report outlines that three factors in particular undermine UNSOM’s mandate: 1) increased herder–farmer conflicts; 2) insurgent group recruitment, and 3) competition over land. Climate change worsens the effects of each. The authors findings include that UNSOM has reacted to these challenges through initiatives that may help to meet short-term needs for a rapid humanitarian response and the long-term objective of achieving a sustainable and resilient society.
