This text examines America’s military intervention in Vietnam, which was driven by three C’s – communism, the Cold War, and credibility. In other words, the piece explores how 1) decolonization shaped Southeast Asian perceptions of communism; 2) Russia’s and the US’ Cold War power struggle affected the latter’s involvement in the region; and 3) Washington’s desire to prove the credibility of its containment policy escalated the conflict.
