The world is experiencing a new wave of energy innovation, driven by the convergence of automation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), advanced manufacturing and big data analytics. This publication outlines the implications of this for the US by analyzing 1) how this so-called fourth industrial revolution is remaking the transportation, electricity, and manufacturing sectors and creating great uncertainties for the future energy landscape; 2) how digital innovation has the potential to transform both the electricity sector and the oil and gas industry by improving productivity, and 3) how policy-makers need to harness these technologies in a way that optimizes a geopolitically and environmentally beneficial transition.
