This text interprets President Trump’s travel bans as part of a larger scheme to secure US access to the personal data of private citizens on a global scale. Amidst ongoing discord over privacy rights and transatlantic data flows, the piece’s authors argue that Trump’s executive orders are starting to distance US security practices from EU data protection policies. The best antidotes to the mistrust and legal uncertainties raised by these orders, or so the authors claim, are increased diplomacy and an emphasis on democratic rule of law.
