This paper reminds us that the Pakistan Army may appear to be a politically coherent and obedient force, but history has proven otherwise. To facilitate a greater understanding of this influential institution, the text’s author 1) assesses its overall culture, structure and strategy, and 2) explains why it has such a privileged place in Pakistani society. He further claims that one way to protect Pakistan’s fragile democracy is to ensure that senior command transitions occur smoothly in the country’s military.
