This paper examines the territorial disputes in the South China Sea, with a focus on key political developments since the Philippines filed for international arbitration over its dispute with China in 2013. More specifically, the text explores 1) how China and ASEAN member states initially reacted to the Philippines’ arbitration process; 2) potential opportunities for ASEAN to form an effective and unified approach to the disputes with Beijing; 3) the potential impact of the China-ASEAN Code of Conduct in the South China Sea, and more.
