This Briefing Paper analyzes how Germany’s security and defense policy has reacted to recent shifts in the country’s strategic environment. Key insights include 1) that tensions in the transatlantic partnership are spurring debate in Germany on how to prepare for the possibility of a post-Atlantic Europe; 2) Germany has renewed its focus on the EU’s security and defense policy, including long-term initiatives to improve European operational readiness; 3) efforts by German politicians to convince the public of the need for a greater international engagement face difficulties as Germans see the threat as negligible and eye the military with suspicion, and more.
