This paper looks at the confrontation among India's governing coalition over the fate of the India-US nuclear deal. It outlines the differences between the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) on the one hand, the left government parties on the other and discusses the options of dropping the deal, dropping the Left or to buy as much time as possible. The author argues that the India-US nuclear deal is, perhaps, the first foreign policy issue in the past decades that has polarized Indian politics so sharply and precipitated a crisis of survival for the government.
