This guide provides an overview of international jurisprudence on the question of torture and other forms of ill-treatment. It examines UN treaty bodies, the European regional system, the inter-American regional system, the African regional system and international tribunals. The authors conclude that the jurisprudence considered in this guide provides great reason for optimism, although enforcement mechanisms at the international and regional level remain relatively weak.
