This paper addresses American rhetoric on terrorism and violent extremism. It outlines the language and communications strategies in US public discourse and it offers recommendations for policymakers and opinion leaders on how to improve their effectiveness. The author recommends correctives in religious terminology, geopolitical generalizing and the indiscriminate use of terms such as “terrorism”.
