This brief discusses the consequences of the 2008 war between Georgia and Russia for the two countries as well as for the EU and the US. The author draws four main conclusions from the war. First, Georgia has paid the prize for its president's folly. Second, Russia now occupies strategic points in Georgia-proper, which threatens the Georgian economy and the transit of oil and gas from the Caspian to the West. Third, the EU should immediately start to integrate Ukraine. Fourth, relations between Russia and the West are deteriorating.
