This paper examines the multi-dimensional relationship between al-Qaida's core and the organization's affiliates. It presents al-Qaida's organizational, operational and psychological processes and analyzes a number of selected suicide attacks as case studies that illustrate the importance of self-sacrifice in terrorist activity. The authors stress that al-Qaida and its affiliates cannot be understood as a homogenous body operating under a unified command and making centralized decisions.
