This brief discusses the resignation of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on 18 August 2008, commenting on backgrounds and implications. It asks why Musharraf lost the support of the military and the US, points to the positive reception of his resignation in the country and explores which forces might fill the political vacuum, addressing the governing parties, the military and the US. The author underlines that for the US the war on terror is the number one foreign policy concern with respect to Pakistan.
