This brief comments on the election of Asif Ali Zardari as Pakistan's president. The author examines the electoral outcome by looking at the voting and addresses the challenges lying ahead of Zardari such as Pakistan's rising militancy and economic crisis. To be at all effective, Zardari’s first priority must be to establish his credibility by restoring the judiciary, respecting the nonpartisan nature of the presidential post and quelling the rising militancy, he concludes.
