This paper provides a brief overview of multi-stakeholder initiatives that go beyond traditional intergovernmental multilateralism. It analyzes why multi-stakeholder cooperation has emerged at the global level, the characteristics and functions of the initiatives and their effectiveness and efficiency. The author also examines the failed attempt to forge a Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI).
