Following the June 2018 Trump-Kim summit in Singapore, this publication reflects on the state of US-North Korean relations. Key insights include 1) that despite the rhetoric in Singapore, the aftermath of the summit revealed the continuing and profound gap in US-North Korea ties; 2) while both sides agreed to further discussions, both Pyongyang and Washington know there is little to talk about due to their inability to compromise over core disputes; and 3) the changing situation in the region means that key US allies, South Korea and Japan, will be loath to permit the US to undermine North Korea’s integration into the regional economic sphere, and more.
