This policy brief explains why pirate attacks similar to those off the coast of Somalia are unlikely to happen in Southeast Asia. The authors note Somalia's lawless territory, the expanse of waters off the coast of Somalia, and Somali pirates' modus operandi as factors exclusive to the region. Nevertheless, the authors observe that an uptick in piracy globally does increase shipping costs originating from Southeast Asia due to the need for rerouting.
